What is Sussex IP?
Sussex IP is a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University of Sussex. We build business opportunities and increase revenue for the University by successfully commercialising its intellectual property.
What do we do?
We exclusively manage the intellectual property of the UNIVERSITY OF Sussex, as well as a number of technologies from outside the University, to increase the commercial value for the inventor (staff or student) and the University. There are two main routes to commercialisation
Licensing is the usual commercial route to market for a staff or student invention. The key stages are patent application, identifying potential licensees, sales, negotiation of terms and granting of a licence. The inventor’s input is needed in all these stages but, decreases after the patenting stage. Sussex IP’s team of professionals can successfully lead and carry out the later stages negotiating one or more licences with an up-front fee and royalty on sales.
Company formations tend to be more time intensive for the academic or student. Sussex IP, working with the Sussex Innovation Centre on campus, sets up companies calling on a network of professional advisors as appropriate. We also identify, broker and negotiate funding of many different types for early stage companies and have access to the Cascade £4M seed fund.
Payments to inventors. Both routes, licensing and company formation – if commercially successful – lead to payments to the inventors as set out in the University’s Code of Practice on IP and Commercialisation which applies to all staff and students.
